David Bowie’s 1st TV Appearance Was to Defend His Long Hair

In 1964, David Jones, who went on to become musical genius David Bowie (1947-2016), made his first-ever TV appearance — and it wasn't to sing.

Bowie, sick of being called "darling" and taunted for his long hair, formed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men, and was interviewed on the British TV show Tonight.

Fascinating time capsule. It seems camp now, but men were actually being fired for wearing long hair at the time, and it was all rooted in homophobia and staid gender norms.

The kid certainly had balls early on!

He made his first TV performance six years later, performing "Space Oddity." This one will look more familiar:
