You Say Marc Singer Made You Gay?

It's okay — we know that people are born gay, but a shockingly larger percentage of gay boys who grew up in the '80s probably discovered the truth about themselves courtesy of The Beastmaster (1982) and its loinclothed star, Marc Singer.

I think his sex appeal inhabits that forbidden space between Peter Scolari (b. 1955) and Kevin Bacon (b. 1958).

In honor of Singer's 71st (!) birthday this week, herewith a gallery of some of his most alluring looks. Granted, many of them are from that movie and its sequels, but hey, when it works that well, it works forever.

Whoever set up this shot was just evil.

First, though, young Marc on a 1974 episode of the Planet of the Apes TV series:

Then, drink in his undeniable beauty in this 1976 production of The Taming of the Shrew opposite Fredi Olster. It's almost obscene:

I wish the U.S. miniseries The Contender (1980; no idea network) would have run a bit longer:

Okay, now it's time for all the myriad of Beastmaster drool shots:

Marc was also a highlight of the 1984 Battle of the Network Stars. I still maintain that whoever came up with and executed that idea — luring celebs into skimpy swimsuits for hours of unguarded filming — did more for humanity than whoever invented sliced bread:

Some random hot moments I could not ID:

Of course, many fans recall Marc from V (1983; 1984; 1984-1985; 2011):

And finally, some more recent snaps of Marc, a headshot and a personal pic at home — still a handsome devil at 71:

  1. If that last shot is him at 70 then he can still get it!! LOL!!

  2. Years before Beastmaster, I was enthralled with Wildboy – https://youtu.be/-NNb1pgQlQo

  3. I still have a wall poster from THE BEASTMASTER! And I was in my 30s then. We’re almost the same age now.

  4. Marc Singer was so handsome in the movie The two worlds of Jennie Logan.
I never forgot that movie. I ordered it from Amazon and watch it from time to time. Both he and Lindsey Wagner looked so perfect together . If they had stayed together they would of been the perfect couple. They complimented each other very well. Then I saw him again in the Beastmaster. Wow what a handsome man.

High School drama class, 1977. Teacher drags in one of those old VCRs, about the size of a Volkswagen. He drops in a tape of a Shakespeare play. The class groans. The tape begins. It’s Ken Campbell’s production of Taming Of The Shrew. The rest is history. The whole class gained a new appreciation of The Bard’s comedies, and half the class (the female half) had a new teenage idol. I’ve followed Mr. Singer’s … stuff … ever since. In the end, he’s always been a classy guy with underrated and underutilized skill. And it only adds to the appeal that he was married to the same woman for nigh on forty years. Add loyal and true to the list of virtues.

  6. See Marc Singer in “Go Tell the Spartans.” Incredibly good looking man.
